Paint Sludge/Waste Removal

  • Remedial Action Already Taken:

From 1987 through 2016, over 60,000 tons of paint sludge and associated soils and 113 drums containing wastes, have been removed from four areas of the Ringwood Mines Superfund Site and disposed of off-site.  Additionally, from 2011 through 2016, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency removed lead-contaminated soil from 23 residences at the site.

    Investigation of Paint Sludge/Waste

    • Crews have walked and recorded observations along 93,000 linear feet (17 miles) of survey lines set up across the known and potential paint waste disposal areas.

    • Crews stopped at 4,610 locations along the survey lines and collected detailed information and noted if paint waste was present – 96% of the locations had no evidence of paint waste (ARCADIS, 2005)

    • Crews completed additional investigation at 79 locations where paint waste was suspected.  Test pits were completed at these locations to see if paint waste was present below the ground surface.  Paint waste deposits were found in 2 of the 79 test pits (ARCADIS, 2008a).

    • Following extensive survey and investigation work, paint waste deposits were assembled into 16 removal areas and Ford removed more than 50,000 tons of paint waste soil and other waste materials from the 16 removal areas and at Peters, Cannon and O’Connor.
